John Lewis Partnership has said its department stores have recorded their highest ever weekly sales, driven by flat-screen TVs and grooming products as the holiday party season moved up a gear.
Department store sales rose 8.4 per cent year-on-year to £91.1m in the week to December 9, cooperative John Lewis said in a statement yesterday.
"The cold weather and onset of the party season are having a strong impact on fashion sales, with menswear 8 per cent up on last year and women's fashion from party dresses to shoes selling strongly, " it said.
Financial markets scan John Lewis's weekly figures for clues on the health of consumer spending, although its upmarket chains largely reflect the spending habits of middleincome shoppers.
John Lewis also operates Waitrose supermarkets, whose weekly sales are reported separately but have also shown strong growth. |
