Scots shoppers went on a multimillion pound Christmas spending spree. Store chiefs are poised to confirm up to £600million was splashed out on gifts, food and drink at shopping malls in Glasgow and at Braehead.
The Fort in Easterhouse has confirmed 1.6million shoppers went through its doors in the four weeks leading up to Christmas - 200,000 more customers than during the same period in 2006.
Centre bosses say the decision to open roundthe-clock for 32 hours up to Christmas Eve paid off.
Manager Phil Goodman said: "We have always believed in late-night shopping and the figures show this has been a popular move."
It's believed the retail hub took in up to £200m.
Other centres also reported good business.
David Pierotti, centre director at Silverburn in Pollok, said he was "very pleased" after 300,000 shoppers visited the new mall.
Hamish Millar, general manager at Buchanan Galleries, said the city centre mall had "performed well" and added: "We've seen healthy figures."
And Susan Nicol at the St Enoch Centre, which is getting a £100m expansion, said sales were "on a par" with last year and predicted "high footfall levels" for 2008.
Braehead reported a big post-Christmas rush.
General manager Peter Beagley said: "People bought millions of pounds worth of our gift vouchers and cards this year."
The Scottish Retail Consortium, which represents the trade, won't publish details until next week.
But director Fiona Moriarty today said: "It was not as bad as some had predicted. A lot of retailers had a reasonable Christmas."
The British Retail Consortium said UK retailers had a "worse than expected" Christmas period, as like-for-like UK sales rose 0.3- per cent last month, their weakest rate for three years.
How the money is spent
Across the country, Scots were predicted to spend a total of £840m on Christmas.
It's expected that figures will show:
- Every adult splashed out an average of £435 on presents.
- Each household spent £162 on food and drink, with Christmas dinner costing £15 per person.
- Almost £3m was spent by Scots on the Christmas turkey and another £1m on brussel sprouts.
- Christmas puddings and cakes generated £5m, while £2m was spent on mince pies.
- Another £3.5m was splashed out on festive decorations, as well as £2.3m on Christmas crackers.
- And to crown it all, sweet-toothed Scots are likely to have gorged more than £23m of chocolates.
